One Down, Eleven To Go

Friday, January 29th, 2010

We’re wrapping up the first month of 20-10, how was it for you?  I know our friend Alina has had a bad so far (Surgery and her car was broken into).  As for me, The Bing injury and still no job are a sour start, but I still have hope for this year!

Speaking of Bing, he saw the bone doctor today and got a cool cast.  He was a very tough little man and only cried a little, but it was worth it because with the cast on we don’t have to worry about re-injury as much!

There were two separate productions going on in NoHo today (C.S.I. was one of them), it’s good to see tv/film keeping production jobs here in So Cal!

Big lottery payout tonight, at last check $145 million, so get a ticket now!

Don’t tell Lucy, but I’m going to the aquarium with my sister on Sunday, it’s photographers night.  I may not be taking my fish expert, but I’m hoping to get some good  photos for our “shark” bathroom.

I am very excited for Stretch/Stench/Mike, it looks like he’ll have a job for sure on Monday… I like to see people actually get radio jobs, especially my friends!

I was at Trader Joes in Toluca Lake this afternoon, It was like a casting call for Gossip Girl, it was only really good looking men and women in there… Well, and me!  Trader Joe ’s rules for 3 things, in my opinion, Cheese, Wine and frozen appetizers… Really, what more do you need!?!?

Quick, grab a harpoon.    The most annoying thing in Glendale… Chicken!  Fit is Fire!  Friend me or I’ll shoot!  It’s almost Lost time.  No shirt, no shoe, have gun, no service.  It’s OK with me if you give him the death penalty.    Bad girls.  Oh ya, Grandpa likes to Sext!!!  He wants his $20.

Have a great weekend!

Now I Know I’m Old

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

I actually think the new Buick’s look cool…  That officially makes me an old man right?  Bing would be so upset, he’s really hung up on Mustangs currently.

Jay Leno was Oprah today (Yes, I watched Oprah), It made me like him less.  He’s trying to repair his image, but to me it came off as insincere and calculated.  He skirted the issue of his failure in prime time and how it dragged the 11p news and ultimately Conan’s ratings down as his ratings tanked.  And Oprah kind of kissed his ass.

I had a really good time last night, a friend took me out for my birthday… It was nice to have some adult time, especially after the stress of the last weekend!

Speaking of last weekends stress, The latest report is that Bing is feeling much better and hasn’t needed any pain killer the last couple days!  We go to the bone doctor tomorrow to get the break checked out… So I’ll know more tomorrow.

I stopped by the CRN today, I miss them, they’re like family to me.  It looks like Jennifer Horn, Eric Horn and I might host a wine show together, the focus will be on affordable wines for the younger, less snouty drinker.

Johnson crashes during practice.  Stop or I’ll staple you!  The author of my favorite book died, R.I.P. J.D.  Just a little bit.  Pup on ice.  Smart baby!  At least he wasn’t choking his chicken.  Hey freeway, look at me!  I want this.

Pain in the Heart

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

It sucks to see your kids in pain!  Poor bowling girl waking up screaming because his finger hurts just breaks my heart, all you can do is hold him until the Tylenol kicks in.

Lucy and I got to play some games while Bing napped yesterday, she’s feeling kind of neglected because Bing is getting so much attention… I’ve promised her a special Daddy and Lucy outing as soon as her brother is feeling better.

As I explained on the pod, my birthday was kind of a bust, but I’m hoping for a better 40th!

I feel like such a pig, the rain has kept me from getting out walking and they’re remodeling the gym in my building, it’s been closed for 2 weeks and will be for 2 more.  I need some sun, so I can walk off all the brownies the kids and I ate last weekend!

Stretch should have more news on the job front this week… I would like for at least one of us to be working!

Super Bowl ad already causing trouble.   Lock down causes plate shortage.  That was nice of Rachel.  Quick, pedal. He’s in a little trouble.   Puppy beater convicted.    Happy birthday offspring of that crazy lady.   You’re never too old to steal.  Bad priest. Where not to stay!

My Birthday Curse

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

I’ve never made a big deal out of my birthday, well on my 30th I had a big party, but other than that I kepp it pretty mellow.  But ever since I’ve had kids there seems to be a curse on it!  I always like to do something the kids enjoy on my B-Day, you know, Chuck E Cheese or go to an amusement park, so that’s the kind of stuff we usually plan.  But for the last 3 or so years we’ve never been able to go through with our plans, One or both kids have been sick… usually tossing their cookies on me at some point during the day! (They both think it’s so funny that they’ve thrown up on me on my birthday, we were laughing about it today!)

So this year, as part of my weekend, I wanted to do something special for both of them, Lucy got to go to The Long Beach Aquarium with Aunt Angela and Bing was going to spend the day with Grandma and I doing his favorite thing, Bowling!

Bing was so excited, we saw Lucy off and wished her a shark filled day, then we got everything we needed: Ronald McDonald bowling ball, bowling shoes and “Bowling Girl” T-Shirt.  Grandma came and picked us up and as we drove to Pickwick every large building we passed, Bing asked “Is that the bowling alley?”  When we arrived he was ecstatic telling Grandma ” I’ve been here before, I love bowling!”

We suited up and entered names into the computer, it was going perfectly… well for 2 frames!  On Bing’s third frame, he picked up his ball, and as he stepped up onto the lane, he tripped and fell.  Down he went, ball driving his hand into a broken board on the edge of the lane.  He instantly started to cry, I picked him up and Grandma ran for ice.  I knew he had pounded his hand, but when he opened it for me to check it was covered in blood, he had cut it too!  It looked like a deep gash, we decided there was no time to wait, he was crying hysterically, we had to go to Urgent Care.

If there is a bright side to an injured child, it is how attentive medical personnel are to them.  At Rapid Care in Burbank they instantly took him in, and Dr. Duran looked him over A.S.A.P.  They determined that at the least he needed to be stitched, I explained that he had been glued before and it was less traumatic, they checked and were out of glue, so they referred us to Rapid Care in Glendale.

We loaded back into Grandma’s four door ambulance and headed to Glendale, Bing was still crying and in pain, it was heart breaking.  When we got there they again took us right in, the Doctor there took a look and decided the cut was too extreme for glue and that we would have to go to an emergency room, so without haste it was back into the car and to the emergency room where I have before received excellent care, St. Joe’s in Burbank (Although since my days in Burbank the name is now Providence ST. Joseph’s).  When Mexico tried to kill me by infecting me with the nastiest bug I’ve ever had that’s where I went.

Once again, they give so much attention and rush the little ones in, we waited only briefly.  The admitting nurse was very kind and professional and decided that seeing as my little manwich had 6 lbs of Ronald McDonald red bowling ball land on his tiny fingers, a X-Ray was in order.  The X-Ray tech took us in and as Bing sat on my lap, she took a couple pictures of his little bandaged hand.

Then we followed a blue line painted on the floor to a blue “X”, there they already knew we were on our way and we only briefly waited again.  Once in the examination room, bing and I sat on the bed, he hadn’t let me put him down since the injury occcured.  Dr. Ignatczyk came in to check out the damage, she was so kind and comforting, the perfect healer for a tiny person in pain, and informed us that Bowling Girls finger was in fact broken.  She ran through what was going to happen with the stitching of the cut and setting of the finger and then went to prepare.  Just then, Bing’s Mom appeared in the doorway, he was excited to see her.  Now he had Grandma, Mommy and Daddy there, which was good, because this was the most trying part.  They had to inject his finger to two spots to numb it, you could see the pain in his eyes as we all helped calm and hold him down.  It is the worst thing as a parent to watch, your child in intense pain, screaming, tears flowing, knowing there is little you can do.  I think the process of sewing only took 5 minutes or so, but it seemed like hours.

When it was done, he had 2 stitches and a finger wrapped to ten times his normal size.  When it was over he finally calmed down, and we could all relax.  Again I want to thank Dr. Ignatczyk and Damian in the ST. Joe’s ER, there would have been no one else I wanted to tend to my boy, they were great!

Equally horrible, as the days events and the pain and tears in Bing’s eyes, was knowing that I don’t have health insurance for my precious children, It is horrible to have to even think about how you’re going to pay for this, when all you want is your child to be better.  Luckily, I have family to help (Thanks Grandma!!!), but I thought of the people who’s lives are not only destroyed by the illness and injures to their children, but the bills that come after.   I was watching something last week and they had a family on who lost one of their twins to cancer (I think), and they spoke of the pain and loss, and it was heart breaking, but also they had to figure out ways to pay off the bills of this tragedy… It is so horrible to think about on so many levels!

Anyway, today, we sit here, the day before my actual birthday, Lucy playig with her Littlest Pet Shop toys and Bing sitting on the couch, beat from his medications and the stress of the day before watching Sponge Bob and propping his mummified finger over his head and all I can think is I wish I had been thrown up on instead!

All Wet

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

I went to the post office this afternoon and had to step in almost knee deep water to get across the street, drainage and North Hollywood are not synonymous!

So I had an interview for a job in radio this morning.  It has been a long time since I’ve actually had an interview in my field of expertise (Not that I think I’m a radio expert, I just couldn’t think of a better word).  It does not look like I will get the position, but I met some really cool people (I had never interviewed with this company before).  The best part was being back in a radio station, there is an energy that a real, working radio station has, and I really miss it.  As I sat waiting, I saw employees come and go chatting with the receptionist, people picking up tickets they won, you know just the normal daily operations of a station… It made me miss working, I miss the almost ten years I spent at STAR.  Anyway, it was fun to be a part of it again, even if it was just for a hour.

Kids come over tomorrow, they haven’t been here for a while, it will be so good to see them.  I promised Bing a trip to the bowling alley to try out the Ronald McDonald ball… Lucy wants no part of it, so I think she’s going to visit the aquarium with Angela Channel.  And there is going to be some fudge making (Not Bing style), it’s the kids new favorite.

Tigers PR move.    He just wanted what he paid for.  It’s not Conan’s fault.  Burglar makes himself at home.  Douche bag needs press.  Yes, they’re too old.  God is mad at Burbank.  IMPORTANT: Crib Recall.  A real cave woman.   Hug a penguin today!

Halfway Through The First Month Of 20-10…

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Only 11 1/2 left!

Before I forget, My Facebook friend, Denise’s son needs your votes:

“My son was in a music video for Usher and they are voting between 2 groups can you send out one of your famous help out a podcast listener notice lol. WWW.GOT-NOISE.COM Killer Killer Bs
Ok, back to the blog, So I got a call from a resume I sent out for a radio producer position in Los Angeles!  It’s not until the middle of next week, so all I can do is stress for 5 days!  I did go get a haircut tonight… I told the stylist I needed something that would get me a job, so now I look respectable… Well, as respectable as I can!
Here’s a fun idea for you part-time parents like me, when I know I won’t see the kids for a while (there is a point in the month where I don’t see the kids for 7 days), gather up their favorite toy or blanket.  At my house we keep “New Baby” and a duplicate of Lucy’s “BoBo Blankie”.  Then, depending on how soon I get working on it, I either take them to places the kids like to go (The park, our favorite restaurant, the pool, etc.) or I pose them with some of their things around the house (their books, in their beds, playing with their toys) and I snap some photos.  Then I use my home printer to make postcards (They sell postcard backs that adhere to 4×6 prints) and right a message on them from the blankie.  I never own up to taking the pictures, in fact I never bring it up at all, I wait for them to tell me “New Baby went to Panera” or “BoBo was reading my shark book”, they get a huge kick out of it… And it passes some time when they’re not here.
I was explaining to my friend the other night, I’m “unsettled”… In fact I was forcefully unsettled.  What I meant is that I was really happy being settled down, having a wife and kids, spending Friday nights getting caught up on the shows we TiVo’d after the kids went to bed.  Now I have been thrown back into being single… I’ve been unsettled!  I need to reacclimate to being alone, not having a partner.  It’s weird going from being the single guy, all alone, to family man, to right back where I started (Only worse off).  I guess it’s just something else I have to get used too.
Get caught up on all the top hits of last year in four minutes!
racist school lunch.   Tylenol recall.  Osama gets a makeover.  Conan out.   Talk about causing a traffic jam. What sex is your house? I hadn’t realized they had been showing mercy?

11 of 38 Left

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

It has been so cool to see the world mobilize so quickly to help the people of Haiti. I posted the info for the Red Cross yesterday, beware of scams and donation cons, tragedy always shows you the best and worst in people.

I have 11 days left of being 38… And I’ll tell you the last year hasn’t been that great, OK, the last two haven’t been good, but I was just recapping the last one.  I am determined to have things better before I’m 40…  Because if things are still crappy for me this time next year I’m going to lose it, a guy can only take so much.  Luckily, the bar hasn’t been set too high… If I can support myself I’m ahead!

Sometimes crazy people will surprise you by actually making some sense…  And I’m not talking about people like Glenn Beck, I mean real homeless, in the streets crazy people.  I went to the market this morning and there was a crazy woman in the parking lot just ranting, she made some great points on foreign affairs and the war… But she kind of lost me when she said I was the devil, I’m no saint mind you, but the devil?

That woman started me thinking about some of the people I met in the mental hospital (And I have written before about some of them).  It was heart breaking to see the people who knew they were “crazy”… there was one gentleman, we’ll call him Stan, who was suffering from extreme bi-polar disorder.  As the meds came and went, he could be quite coherent, and I had some time to speak to him.  I found out a lot about his life… And how his lifelong mental problems had pretty much destroyed it.  When he was coming off the meds he would hardly recognize me, having not only mental lapses, but physical ticks and tremors,  but when they were in full effect he was a very kind, charming person.  He had told me about his failed marriage, the family he had lost contact with, the jobs that came during periods of control and were lost shortly there after when his disease would again take control.  I felt so sad for him… And it made me so upset with people that I know (You know who I’m talking about) who use bi-polar disorder as an excuse to justify the fact that in truth they just are self absorbed , bad people.  Meeting Stan, and the others who were there with me, has had a huge impact on my life…  I now better understand who is truly crazy and who is suffering from a disease.

Ready for blast off! No… it’s says “Choking ON his chicken.”  They repossessed my kid!  At least they always put their money where their mouth is.  Speaking of choking.  O.C. fairgrounds might go for 55 million!?!? Ever wondered what you could get for a 2 Y.O.  Cheaters guilt pays off for Haiti.  2012 fashion.

Picture Perfect… Book ‘Em, Daddo!

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

This one requires a little solo Dad work, but the results are great!  Taking photos is a must if you have kids ( I may go a little overboard, but digital photography has made it cheap and easy to capture almost every moment!)  The downside to this digital photo revolution is that many of us don’t print the pictures, they sit on a card or hard drive, un-viewed and unappreciated, or on your Facebook page, where friends can see them, but the kids don’t really have access.

So What I do, is every 4 to 6 months, I make a photo book of our “Adventures” (We’re on volume 4 right now.)  You may be asking yourself, what the heck is a photo book?  Think old school, yellowing pages, plastic sheet pulled over your pics, photo album… Only way, way cooler.  You get to place the photos, design the pages and the best part, write the captions. (I’ll explain why this is the best part soon).  Sites like Shutterfly, Snapfish and Photoworks are great places to start… And if you get on their mailing list they’ll sent you promotions (which often include huge discounts on photo books.)   A side benefit is that when you upload your photos to these sites they store them for you… Just another way to back-up your precious memories.

If your kids are older you can have them help with the whole creation process… But if they’re small like mine, it’s more fun to surprise them!  The end result looks just like a real book you would buy at the book store, so the kids are amazed their pictures are in there.  This is where the captioning comes in, I try to write the captions at the reading level of the kids, it’s a great way to promote reading, nothing is more fun than reading about themselves and the places they have been… And I throw in a wacky few that Bing will latch onto.  When we go through the books, Bing will remember certain captions and yell them out.  We read ours as a bedtime story or when we’re sitting on the couch in the evening.

And knowing that you are not all single losers like me… They make a great gift for the spouse too!  I had a dear friend surprise me with one filled with photos that they had taken while our kids were hanging together and I love it.

So get that camera out and start shooting!

Horrified By Haiti ( And Why I’m Boycotting NBC )

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

You can’t escape the footage of the devastation in Haiti… And I don’t think you should, remember earthquakes are our problem too! Sure our building have greater structural integrity and we have better emergency response resources, but we’ve seen buildings fall, freeways collapse and fires ravage after a quake.  To watch the footage of parents carrying the bodies of their children through the streets, it breaks your heart.  There are many ways to help, but I always feel like the Red Cross is a good place to start, right now you can Send a $10 donation by texting ‘Haiti’ to 90999 .

As I watched the news, I was struck again by the importance of social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and flickr …  These sites are some of the only ways people in Haiti have had to communicate with the outside world, and were the source of many of the first images mainstream media aired.  I often run into to people who discount Twitter and refuse to accept it’s importance, but look at recent history, I think the people of Iran and Haiti would disagree with these naysayers.   It’s true that most tweets are unimportant trivia (which I still love to read!), but when unrest or tragedy strikes, it’s importance shines bright.

Speaking of Twitter, I keep forgetting to mention, Kevin Nominated us for a shorty award, here’s how you vote: The Shorty Awards: http://www.shortyawards.com/jackandstretch
To have your vote count you have to be logged into twitter.com and have a open/ non private twitter account and you have to put a reason after the BEACUSE. I nominated you guys under innovation for the podcast.

Also, The Pod has a new “drunk dial Line”… although you can call it and leave any kind of message you want!  Complain, suggest, report, disagree… whatever you want, (I have to set up the voice mail, but I think you can start leaving messages right away) it’s (818) 253-1360.  Put it in your cell memory, so you can leave us messages from where ever your at!

Also, keep forgetting to mention a cool art show out in Hesperia on Jan 23rd, click here for info.

I have been laying low this week, I’ve been in a weird mood.  It looks like I may be working (Not in radio) soon and this has raised many new problems and emotions… That I won’t get into now, but I’ll fill you in some day.  I did have a great conversation with someone yesterday, she was highly motivating and is helping me start my own project which I am really excited about… More detail to come on that soon too.

It’s amazing how little things can cheer you up, I twit pic’ed it yesterday, but I found a Ronald McDonald 6lb bowling ball on ebay for cheap, so I got it for Bing.  He hasn’t seen it yet, but it made me happy…. There’s just something about getting someone something they’ll really love!

Here we blame coyotes. No free ride for Tiger.  Just in case you needed more reasons to hate Pat Robertson. There is no joy in this joy ride.    She needs a brain lift. Dexter has cancer!  A sad day for punks. See, we’re not cavemen.

On a side note, until we see how this whole Conan/Leno thing pans out I’m not using NBC LA as a news source anymore, I really feel that the NBC Network is the Clear Channel of TV, making decisions based on the cheapest cost without regard to audience desires (Who are their customers)… And when their costing cutting ideas fail, they continue to screw the talent in which they employee and the people who tune into their programming.    Biggest Loser isn’t just a show on NBC, it’s what their employees and viewers are!

Out Of The Frying Pan, Into The Market

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

I’ve told you before, heck we’ve even made videos, about how cooking is a great way to spend time with the kids… Well, the preparation can be just as great!  Talk to your Tot about what they want to make, search the internet for a recipe (Or pick something easy like homemade pizza or cookies).  Make a shopping list, now depending on how old your kids are this process can differ, but with my kids I read off the ingredients and they draw pictures of them on our list along with the quantity we need.  We start in the pantry and see if we have any of the items, if we do we cross them off… For everything else we’re off to the market.  And don’t incorporate this into your normal market trip, make it special for this project.  Go down the aisles, let them find the items, explain pricing and size options… It is not just quality time, but a great learning experience for them to learn how to compare items, learn lessons about money and better understand sizes and measurements.  Also, about completing tasks and following a list.

Once the list is complete, the only thing left to do is cook!  Go home and have a blast!

If you have any fun “Dad-Tivities” sent them to me at jack@dadjack.com
