I had a great Father’s Day! I used to get bummed when I dropped the kids off Father’s Day evening, but I really have tried to make the most of all the time I have with my kids… Not just on holidays or special events, so for me everyday with my kids is Father’s Day! We went early to see Inside Out ( I give it 3 out 5 Squirrels – I just decided this is my rating system! 5 Squirrels is a must see, I Squirrel is don’t bother! It was good, just not great and in no way the best Pixar movie to date.) Then we hit the pool at my Sister’s… Swimming is always a win in kidland, and Daddy digs it too when it’s 100!
While we were sitting around the pool the topic of family vacations came up, with my sister noting that we went on very few as kids… In my Mom’s defense vacations are expensive and are even more difficult to afford when you’re a single Mom raising 2 kids! We were racking our brains trying to think of vacations we went on and I remembered that my Mom and her partner at the time had taken us to a gay resort in Palm Springs… I hadn’t thought about that vacation in years. My Mom’s spouse pointed out that I said it was a “gay” resort, I think trying to point out that I was putting more importance on that aspect than that it was just a resort in Palm Springs. It got me thinking about about my childhood in the late 70s/early 80s. Growing up with a gay Mom we experienced disapproving looks and comments from straight people for sure and I often felt out of place and uncomfortable…But it went the other way as well. My Mom had many amazing friends who were very kind to my sister and I, but I also remember being at gay events were we also got disapproving looks and were made to feel uncomfortable (there were not nearly as many kids at gay events/resorts back then… I don’t remember seeing any other kids at that vacation and growing up I only knew one other kid with two Moms), that vacation at the “gay resort” was one of those times. In my lifetime I have seen a bunch of change, heck my Mom just got married last month! The kids have had classmates with gay parents and no one thinks twice about it… And when you go to Gay Pride or The French Quarter Restaurant or West Hollywood in general you see many families. As someone who was in the middle it is great to see change both ways!
The kids and I went to a Los Angeles Dodgers game last week… And we had a great time. I think it was about 3 years since the last time we went to a game, you forget how much fun a ball game is! Between the food, the crowd and the excitement of dodging foul balls (that may just be in the section we were sitting in) it is a great family evening…. I highly recommend trying to make it to a game this season (and don’t forget we also have The Angels and Padres near…. Petco in San Diego is an awesome stadium.)
Ethan ( aka State Shirt, aka my Brother-in-Law) got back to his racing roots at the 24 Hours Of LeMons this weekend… It’s basically an endurance race for junky cars. The kids and I made the journey out to Buttonwillow to check it out on Saturday. It was really fun, the racers decorate their cars in outrageous themes and tear around the track… And to be honest, it is amazing that most of these cars are running, let alone racing!
And now some music I’m digging:
Beck – “Dreams”
Vance Joy – “Mess Is Mine”
Radical Face – “Welcome Home”
Rock On, Jack
