Fun on the 4th

Fun on the 4th

If I had to guess right now I would say that Lucy will be an expert on sharks and Bing on super cars when they grow up…  But there is a long time between now and then.  When I was my kids age I was into Queen and riding my bmx bike… At 44 I still love cycling and music, but I am no expert.  The topic I have become the go-to guy on is divorce… That would have never been my guess for what my expertise would be when I was a kid…  My parents were divorced, and although theirs was amicable, it wasn’t one of my favorite topics.  I really don’t mind… In fact it has kind of put a positive spin on the otherwise super negative aspect of my life.  It makes me feel great to lend advice and help people when they are going through that difficult, emotionally draining event in their life.  But if you had told 8 year old Jacky that he would be your divorce expert he would have said “No way” …  And then rode away on his bmx bike listening to “We Are The Champions.”

Fireworks by the coasters

Fireworks by the coasters

4th of July was awesome, we ended up spending the day with family swimming at my sister’s house and then catching fireworks and coasters at Magic Mountain.  I really expected it to be crazy crowded at the amusement park… but surprisingly it was not!  We ended up getting to ride a bunch of rides, including Twisted Colossus, and watched stuff blow-up! It was a good day!

I drive a lot, a little over 20,000 miles a year, which means my car goes through normal wear and tear.  I hate going to the repair shop, I always feel like they are trying to screw me (and because of my limited knowledge of cars if they are I won’t know it.)   Recently I needed new struts and as I was researching how much I should pay I came across YourMechanic.com .  It is a website where you tell them what work you need done, they give you a price and then send a mechanic to your work or home to make the repairs.  I was unsure about this, but I read a bunch of online reviews (and the price quoted was $200 less than a local shop had quoted me) and decided to give it a try.  Well it went exactly as promised and the work was done (right in my driveway) as promised, correctly and quickly.  So I would recommend checking it out, I will use them again for sure.

I don’t have cable… or satellite…  I have a digital antenna.  That means I get all the networks (in Hi-Def) and a bunch of weird channels… our newest find is Buzzr.  Buzzr shows old game shows like Press Your Luck, What’s Your Line, Tattle Tales, Match Game, Price Is Right, Family Feud and others.  These are all shows I watched and loved as a kid… But I never thought my kids would dig them.  Both kids have started watching all the time, Bing is a huge Press Your Luck fan (No Whammies!!!!  He even watched the special about the guy who figured out the system and took the show for 100k) and Lucy likes To Tell The Truth.  One of the funniest aspects of them getting into these old shows is the questions the consolation prizes spawn… For example, Bing wanted to know why there was colored toilet paper? I hadn’t thought about that in years, they used to sell toilet paper in different colors… something an 8 and 11 year old have never seen! It’s been fun reliving these old shows with the kids!

Music I like this week:

BOY – “We Were Here”

The Weekend – “Can’t Feel My Face”

Major Lazer & DJ Snake – “Lean On (Featuring Mo)”

Father John Misty – “The Suburbs” (Arcade Fire Cover)

Rock On, Jack
