First Jamie, Now Stench!

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Jamie White has now completed to days as part of the BJ, Howie and Jamie team on Alice in Denver…  I’ve heard it has sounded pretty good (But I haven’t listened so I can’t give you a first hand review!)  But there is another new show in town… And this one I have listened to!  Michael “Stretch, Stench” Roberts debuted as morning show producer of The Tattoo and Cece Show on KDAY in Los Angeles!   They aren’t letting them talk much yet, but I did hear Stench in the background… And the show is only going to grow, so add 93.5 fm to your presets!   I am so excited for both of them… I hope both shows are huge!!!

First Blog of 2012

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

This year has started with some Jamie, Jack and Stench News (Well, not Jack news and not the three of us together, but there is news!)

First, Jamie (White) is returning to the airwaves! She will be joining BJ and Howie on ALICE in Denver, CO.  This is doubly exciting for me, one because I’m glad to see Jamie working again and two because it’s good to actually see a radio station adding staff and not firing or down-sizing.  KALC will be airing the new line-up with Jamie starting Monday January 9th.

Second, Stench’s son has his first MMA fight on January 14th!  He will be fighting at the Normandie Casino on the 14th and tickets are $50 (click link for details.)  Also, we are very close to being able to hear the radio show Stench produces on L.A. Radio… They will be on mornings soon, I’ll post when they officially announce.

As for me… Not much going on, but I am so happy for my friends!

The kids and I had a very nice holiday season, spending Christmas in Burbank and ringing in the New Year in San Diego…  Now it’s back to reality.  There is a depression that sets in after the holidays, all the hype and expectation and then it’s just over and everything returns to the way it was.  I’m hoping the job market gets better for me and many of my friends who are out of work (And I think we’ll see a little bit of improvement… It’s an election year, even if falsely, they will try to make things look better).

Look for a book review early next week (I took a break from reading over the holidays) and more of my usual posts.

Happy New Year and Rock On, Jack

It’s Finally Here…

Friday, October 28th, 2011

It’s Halloween weekend and the kids are so excited.  With the holiday falling on a Monday it has given us the whole weekend to fill with costume fun.  Lucy the witch and Bing the frog will be on a whirlwind tour of trick or treats and ghouls and ghosts.

It is always a great time of year for us… although it kicks off the crazy season for us.  It’s Halloween, then one week later Lucy’s 8th and Bing’s 5th birthday, followed shortly thereafter by Thanksgiving and then Christmas craziness.  As fun as the holiday’s are I’m not looking forward to the stress… It’s a tough time of year for many of us who are unemployed, especially those with kids.  You have to get creative on a limited budget!

Some of the things that I found that help are: Keep an eye out at local retailers for pre-holiday clearance sales and grab any deals you see.  Target will sometimes clear out last years toys to make room for new arrivals saving you sometimes over 50%.  Sites like Groupon , Fab.com and others give you credit for referrals… Which then gives you credit to spend on gifts.  And let’s not forget one of the best options, a handmade gift.  Go through the photos you’ve shot over the past year, find some good ones of friends and family, print them out and frame… In this age of digital photography we really actually print out our photos, so it makes for a thoughtful, unique gift.

It’s looking like Stench may have a job… And it’s in radio!  I’ll post details as soon as he is able to publicly able to discuss.  I’m really happy for him…  After the slaughter of a bunch of radio people nationwide this week I’m just happy to see anyone actually get hired in the industry.  Not much on the horizon for me, I’ve been trying to escape radio, but so far no other industry wants me!

Stench had technical problems this week so I’ve been posting the Podcast… I’m always amazed when I see how many podcasts we have in the can! 1137 hours of pod power…  or over 47 days of non-stop listening!  Thanks for sticking with us!

Have a great Halloween!!!!!! Boo, Jack

What I Miss Most About Working…

Monday, October 10th, 2011

(Well besides a paycheck!) Are the friends.  I have always had a close relationship with the people with I have worked with and they were a large part of my personal life.  The great thing is that I have remained friends with many of these people and through the magic of Facebook I get to stay up-to-date with what they are up to… no matter how far apart we are now.

When my divorce started I was working with Tony and Kris in San Diego producing their country music genre morning show.  They were both so great to me during this horrible time in my life and continue to be great friends…  Which makes it even better to watch their syndicated show grow, getting bigger ad better all the time.  They have announced they are hosting a country music cruise next year about this time ( all the details can be found here.)  They have not announced the musical line-up yet, but here’s what I know: 1. They throw a great party (T,K and I tore up San Diego on more than one occasion!) 2. They know everyone in country music (many of which they have tore up San Diego and now Nashville with!), so odds are good they are going to get some great artists for these 5 days cruising Mexico. 3. They didn’t let anyone tell them they couldn’t continue providing quality morning radio, when they presented with a road block they plowed right through it and built their own successful syndicated radio show!  I guess what I’m saying is that you won’t find a better party with better guys than their cruise (and you have plenty of time to plan ahead!)

I was bummed when my friend Bradley moved back to Boston earlier this year, we had some great time over the years at both KROQ and STAR 98.7…  Not to mention in the years since.  I am excited that not only did he find a radio gig there almost right away, but he is now working on building his own advice show on Mix 104.1 in Boston .   It airs Sunday night 7-9pm Pacific, if you get a chance give it a listen online…  you may even hear a familiar voice asking Brad and Meredith for some of their wisdom.

I would love to have an update for you on Stench and I… No news as of right now.  We continue to look and the podcast chugs along with at the time of this posting 1123 hours of pods under our belts!

I’ll be joining whoever shows up this Friday at 5pm at Champ’s in Burbank for some Happy Hour fun…  We do these every once in awhile, they’re always a good time!

It’s Rocktober….

Friday, October 1st, 2010

I miss the good old days of radio when it was “Rocktober” all month long!

Had Bing’s final eye doctor appointment yesterday, his eye is 100% healed… And the doctor add that it was an extremely painful injury and Bing took it like a man, calling him a “tough guy.”  I was a little stressed about this one, it always sucks when your kids are sick or injured, but the eyes seem extra delicate.

Lucy has soccer game number two this weekend… And it’s supposed to be hot and humid again.  Nothing like a field full of hot, tired, sweaty 6 year olds!

Stench returns from New York City this weekend… Just in time to celebrate his wife’s birthday and their anniversary.  Happy B-Day FBG and Happy 8th (I think) Anniversary to them both.

I so slacked this week, although it was hotter than hell in my apartment (I only have a single wall unit for the whole place), so I didn’t bake the peanut butter/chocolate cookies I promised Bing… We’ll just have to make them together this weekend.  Here’s the kids and I demonstrating how to make them about a year and a half ago, you just add chocolate chips to this recipe.

A doctor you don’t want to make house calls.   This is why you don’t let your kids play in the car.  Shocker.  R.I.P. Alvila.  Can you use paper towels to clean up this kind of spill?  Homophobic baker.  This is just wrong! She’s also a facial hair offender!

Have a great weekend!

Last “adult” weekend for a while…

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

And I’m not upset about it!  I can’t wait for the kids to get back… And they’ll be with my Mom and me for 2 weeks!  We have lots of fun stuff planned, Universal Studios, Classic Car Show in Burbank, Dodgers Game, tide pools with Angela Channel and whatever else we can think up.

Lucy is in for a surprise, She thought she was getting an iCarly lunchbox this year…  But check out this Groupon, She’s getting a “My Dad Rules” lunchbox with my face on it!!!!  Speaking of that, I need to get her the backpack she wants (iCarly as well), Target is already starting to sell out of back to school stuff.

I didn’t do much of anything yesterday, nice long walk, short nap, some afternoon work (We recorded Carly Fiorina for today’s show yesterday, so it was a little busier than normal… If you’re interested in hearing her click here).   I must admit, I wasn’t really that into politics or finance, but I have  learned a lot from Ron and am enjoying it greatly… It’s an interesting time both politically and economically to be entrenched in this world.

I did a little project yesterday, I have a picture frame that I hated the color of the wood… So I sanded it and re-stained it.  I’ll see how it turns out after it dries… initial assessment is that it’s too dark, but we’ll see.

Duck cops a feel.  This isn’t good news.  No toad licking in the kitchen please.  Attack of the huge ice chunk! Stench and I may be married by the end of the day.  No one said molesters were smart.  Gross.

Rock on, Jack

Back To The AM

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I just fund out today that they are moving my hours back to a 3am start time… And I’m actually pretty happy about it.  Those were the hours I originally signed up for, they actually afford me more time with the kids.  The show has been going well (I produce the  Insana Quotient hosted by Ron Insana), it’s business talk, so it’s a little different from what I have done in the past… But it’s always exciting to try something new.

The kids Mom called, I guess Lucy has been running a fever, but has no other symptoms… So I’m not too worried, Bing had something similar a week or so ago. It’s been so crazy around here I wasn’t able to schedule a time to see them midweek this week… Luckily, things are getting all ironed out and that shouldn’t be a problem from now on.

Lost has been doing a fairly good job of wrapping things up… I’m kind of bummed that it will all be over soon, there aren’t that many shows I currently look forward too.

The apartment search continues on, we’ve seen some good ones (My Sister and Mom have been helping)… But haven’t found the “one” yet (Although I’m willing to settle!  I just need to find something OK, in my price range).

We found out yesterday that we will be doing a live podcast at Farrell’s in Santa Clarita on Wednesday June 23rd at 7p!!!!! So if you can make it come hang out!!!  Speaking of hanging out, I will be doing just that at The Tallyrand Restaurant in Burbank this Friday (In 2 days) for some Happy Hour fun (I’ll be there anytime after 5:30p)…. Just decided to celebrate the launch of the new show and hang with my peeps!  All are welcome.

It’s Weird…

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

When you know someone who does something truly crazy.  I guy I knew lost it and shot his girlfriend, had a stand-off with the S.W.A.T. Team and had a stash of illegal automatic weapons.  We were by no means close friends, but we knew each other and would communicate on Facebook every once in a while.  After I heard I looked at his FB page, I don’t think he was planning on coming out of that stand-off alive based on a couple posts he left while it was happening… I’m glad it didn’t turn into a blood bath!  It’s just strange to actually know someone from these stories that we read too often.

CRN has been going very well, it’s amazing to see so much progress so quickly.  Jennifer, Eric (from the Van video) and I recorded a radio show which will air on KSPA 151o (out in the 909) Saturday night  fro 9-11p… That was a lot of fun.

Also, Good Podcast this Friday! Aisha Tyler ended up being on with us during a police chase, it was fun.

The whole Sandra Bullock/ Jesse James thing is a bummer… But it’s not like he was a quality guy before they met, look he knocked up a porn star, not exactly the kind of guy I suggest you take home to Mom.

Hey, it’s Friday tomorrow!!!!

What The Podcast Is…

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I read some of the comments from the last blog and it started me thinking about what the podcast is… and what it has become.

This is by no means an attack on the people who said they stopped listening when Jamie left (I get that and those people really didn’t cause that drastic a change in the amount of listeners.)  Many people listened to the radio show strictly and specifically for Jamie, and I don’t blame them she is a radio superstar with a unique gift that many have tried to copy (Jillian Barberie, Chelsea Handler), but none do as well.  But lets face it, she was never a huge part of the podcast’s three year history.

I’m not going to lie, the podcast started as an “F” you to big radio… You think you can fire us and make people not care, we’ll show you.  No radio show had done that, no one had taken ownership of their listeners.  In days prior, you got fired, and if you weren’t hired at another radio station, you disappeared.  There was no model, no one to look to to see how to do it, we kind of made it up as we went.  Angela Channel tackled the technical part (With the help of Andrew) and built a system that would work for our subscriber based idea from scratch.  There was trial and error, as those of you who have been here since the beginning know, but we figured it out.

We were a joke in the radio industry, look at those has-beens and their pathetic “podcast”.  “It’ll never work, it’s just sad”, was the sentiment going around the business, but we swallowed our pride… and proved them wrong.  Now, three years later, it is crazy to think of a popular show not podcasting, whether they are on or off “terrestrial”  radio.  The same people that mocked us on their radio show years ago, ran to the podcast format when they were let go.  Ultimately the “joke” has become the standard.

But that is really not why our podcast matters.  What it started as, is not what it has become.  Our pod is not always the most entertaining, technically perfect or even relevant.  Don’t get me wrong, some days it is all those things and more.  The Jack and Stench pod (The name it has had for the majority of it’s existence) is about friendship and dedication, it’s about family and sacrifice, honesty and sharing.  Not just between Stretch and me, but between us and you.

It hasn’t always been easy, for either of us.  I won’t go into the stresses and challenges Stretch has gone through over the last three years, I wouldn’t want to speak for him (We all know he has his own voice!)  Stretches of unemployment,  a mental breakdown, divorce, full time jobs and full time families have all been intertwined through the fabric that creates the podcast.  There were days, when the last thing I wanted to do was record that damn show… I remember recently, coming home from court, my divorce final, sitting down on my couch and breaking down crying, and thinking I have to pull it together, we have to record the pod in a hour.  Or logging onto Skype the day after getting out of the mental hospital, having to confront my demons into that headset.  There are days when I wish we could keep going, a hour isn’t long enough to laugh with my friend and talk about the world and it’s strangeness.

The pod is an inside joke between us and you, it’s good times and bad shared with friends, it’s our secret club that we’d at least like to think others would like to be a member of if they just knew about it. It’s not a radio show anymore, and it’s definitely not the Jamie, Jack and Stench Show.  It’s become about us being loyal to each other through thick and thin, the line between audience and entertainer almost totally erased, you are the pod, we just show up to turn on the mics and make sure they record. Maybe that’s why it can’t survive, something that personal may not have the mass appeal to sustain it’s self.

The Pod Mafia, The Myspace Army, The Silent Listeners and those of you who have not received a title yet, You are the podcast… And no matter what happens (We haven’t given up yet), you should be proud… You accomplished that “F” you and you created a family from a radio show… And that Rules!

All Wet

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

I went to the post office this afternoon and had to step in almost knee deep water to get across the street, drainage and North Hollywood are not synonymous!

So I had an interview for a job in radio this morning.  It has been a long time since I’ve actually had an interview in my field of expertise (Not that I think I’m a radio expert, I just couldn’t think of a better word).  It does not look like I will get the position, but I met some really cool people (I had never interviewed with this company before).  The best part was being back in a radio station, there is an energy that a real, working radio station has, and I really miss it.  As I sat waiting, I saw employees come and go chatting with the receptionist, people picking up tickets they won, you know just the normal daily operations of a station… It made me miss working, I miss the almost ten years I spent at STAR.  Anyway, it was fun to be a part of it again, even if it was just for a hour.

Kids come over tomorrow, they haven’t been here for a while, it will be so good to see them.  I promised Bing a trip to the bowling alley to try out the Ronald McDonald ball… Lucy wants no part of it, so I think she’s going to visit the aquarium with Angela Channel.  And there is going to be some fudge making (Not Bing style), it’s the kids new favorite.

Tigers PR move.    He just wanted what he paid for.  It’s not Conan’s fault.  Burglar makes himself at home.  Douche bag needs press.  Yes, they’re too old.  God is mad at Burbank.  IMPORTANT: Crib Recall.  A real cave woman.   Hug a penguin today!
