What I Miss Most About Working…

Monday, October 10th, 2011

(Well besides a paycheck!) Are the friends.  I have always had a close relationship with the people with I have worked with and they were a large part of my personal life.  The great thing is that I have remained friends with many of these people and through the magic of Facebook I get to stay up-to-date with what they are up to… no matter how far apart we are now.

When my divorce started I was working with Tony and Kris in San Diego producing their country music genre morning show.  They were both so great to me during this horrible time in my life and continue to be great friends…  Which makes it even better to watch their syndicated show grow, getting bigger ad better all the time.  They have announced they are hosting a country music cruise next year about this time ( all the details can be found here.)  They have not announced the musical line-up yet, but here’s what I know: 1. They throw a great party (T,K and I tore up San Diego on more than one occasion!) 2. They know everyone in country music (many of which they have tore up San Diego and now Nashville with!), so odds are good they are going to get some great artists for these 5 days cruising Mexico. 3. They didn’t let anyone tell them they couldn’t continue providing quality morning radio, when they presented with a road block they plowed right through it and built their own successful syndicated radio show!  I guess what I’m saying is that you won’t find a better party with better guys than their cruise (and you have plenty of time to plan ahead!)

I was bummed when my friend Bradley moved back to Boston earlier this year, we had some great time over the years at both KROQ and STAR 98.7…  Not to mention in the years since.  I am excited that not only did he find a radio gig there almost right away, but he is now working on building his own advice show on Mix 104.1 in Boston .   It airs Sunday night 7-9pm Pacific, if you get a chance give it a listen online…  you may even hear a familiar voice asking Brad and Meredith for some of their wisdom.

I would love to have an update for you on Stench and I… No news as of right now.  We continue to look and the podcast chugs along with at the time of this posting 1123 hours of pods under our belts!

I’ll be joining whoever shows up this Friday at 5pm at Champ’s in Burbank for some Happy Hour fun…  We do these every once in awhile, they’re always a good time!

Back-Forwards

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

That’s what Lucy and Bing call rewinding… “Back-Forwards.”  If something particularly amusing happens on TV I hear the chant of “back-foreward it, back-forward it!”  (This can happen multiple times during the “mini-movie” Banana on The Despicable Me DVD)  It’s always great to see them enjoying something and really laughing, so I never mind back-forwarding.

Now in life it’s a different story…  It seems like I have been back-forwarding for years now.  Unemployment, divorce, unemployment again… and then again, it’s been a lot of rewinding.  I briefly felt like life might be on “play” again… I had a job, was able to pay my expenses and have a little left over to enjoy time with the kids, and that was OK.  I’m not looking to fast-forward or even skip a chapter ahead, at this point I’d be happy with “pause”, just maintaining life where it is right now.

I know that it takes true perseverance to get up after being knocked down…  But I also understand how exhausting it is to repeatedly get up just to be knocked down again.  It sometime seems that no matter how much you dance around the ring you just can’t avoid those knock-down punches.

I’m not trying to get rich or build an empire… just keep a 2 bedroom apartment in Burbank, make the payment on a small import car and keep some food in the fridge, who thought that would be so hard?

I did have a nice long weekend.  The kids and I were able to get a lot in and we saw a bunch of friends we hadn’t seen in a long time.  The unusual hours I had for the past year had really kept me out of touch with many of my friends. The kids were able to get some swimming in, which is like winning the lottery to a 4 and 7 year old…  They’re still upset that I moved out of that horrible North Hollywood apartment because it had a pool and a hot tub (Bing is a man of leisure, he enjoys a nice hot tub and a snifter of apple juice!)

The podcast continues on… Although Stench had a minor relapse over the weekend and we were almost back on “Just jack Pods”…  which are painful for everyone!  Alina still joins us often (she is feeling much better!) and we may have a live pod event soon!

I’m sure everyone knows by now, but if you haven’t checked out Groupon yet you should… They have great deals, the kids and I have done so many things we have purchased there.

And if you haven’t yet, check out my guys Tony and Kris….  Besides being great guys and country music insiders, I love that they bucked the system and started their own syndicated show after being let go from Clear Channel San Diego.  Go Tony and Kris!

For What I’m Worth…

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

I’ve been feeling pretty worthless lately due to my financial situation… Which got me thinking what are we really worth, now I’m horrible at math (Which is why I didn’t pursue a science degree, if I had I’d probably still be a useful member of society… Damn you Chemistry!), so lets see how this works.

We’ll start with a known value, my worth to my Ex ( $$$ ), she has made it known that money is her number one priority, and I pay her every month… I actually have to respect that at least I know exactly where I stand with her and no one wants me to succeed more, because it means more money for her.  Then there is my value to my kids, I know this is an unmeasurable number and that this value will only increase with their age, but currently if asked Lucy would rank me somewhere around a Littlest Pet Shop toy and Bing, I would think, would put me on par with a bowling ball ( LP/BB ).  How about the blog?  There is some value in this, I think it is about as important as the show Dirtiest Jobs, it’s mildly entertaining and you take away some useless information (Rowe ).  Friends and Family is probably a negative number in my equation because I get more than I give… I’m kind of draining! (- Drama )  And what about my value to society?  Well, I’ve been out of work for over a year and really haven’t contributed much. ( – EDD ) Finally, there is my value to me… I like me, I think I’m a pretty good person (That doesn’t mean I’m proud of everything I’ve done, but overall, there are way worse people out there ). ( Me! )

So I think this woud be the math:

$$$ + LP/BB + Rowe – Drama – EDD + Me! = Jack

That’s enough math!  In other news, I forgot to mention a few things on yesterday’s blog.  First, my friends Tony and Kris are back on the radio!  If you like country music you have to check out their syndicated show.  I so happy that people I like are back on the radio, it gives me hope that’ll happen for some of the rest of us.  Also, I have to admit that The Erik and Jack Attack over on CRN is growing on me… I love that they have some fight in them and they give us crap right back, it really makes it more fun for us!

Bob’s Big Boy tonight (Sun Valley location 6-10p)… I’ll post some pics!  Meet the Love Boss in person and see how many Big Boy Combos Stench can kill off!

Floating cops.  Not much of a Ninja! Q: Who still writes letters? A: perverts! This happens way too often! Stench’s great, great, great , great, great, great, great grand mummy. Jackson accusers Dad kills self.  Don’t fight with this guy.  This guy really hates weed.  Lucy would think this was cool.  I’ll see your knife and raise you a bench.
